Apple Store Down! [Not for White iPhone 4]

TiPb nation, rev up your ZOMGS and get ready for SQUEEE — the Apple Online Store is down world wide.

Now before you get too excited, this is not for the White iPhone 4. That’s been delayed until later this year. Unfortunately, this time it’s probably not for any iOS devices. If the rumors are true, what we’ll see today are 12-proc Mac Pro, updated iMac, 27″ LED displays, and maybe — just maybe — the MagicPad multitouch trackpad for the Mac.

Give us your best guesses in the comments and we’ll find out just as soon as the store comes back up.

Apple brings multitouch to desktops with Magic Trackpad

Apple Magic Mouse

The Apple Online Store is back up and with it comes the Magic Trackpad, bringing full on MacBook-style multitouch goodness to Apple’s desktop line.

It’s got click, scroll, swipe, and rotate, so if the Magic Mouse just wasn’t enough for you, here’s the escalation you’ve been waiting for. Oh, and there’s an Apple battery re-charger to go with it.

And while it’s not the iPhone or iPod touch “Magic Trackpad” app I’ve been waiting for — can you please get on that Apple? — it does show Apple is continuing to leverage their technologies across their various platforms, devices, and machines, creating a virtuous cycle iOS is sure to benefit from as well.

(And no, there’s no info on whether or not it will work as a companion to the BT Keyboard for iPad — we’ll have to try it when it arrives).

$69. Anyone besides me picking one up?

Android Captivate and Vibrant get reviewed — the competition

AT&T and T-Mobile bring the Android competition with the Samsung Galaxy S-class Captivate and Vibrant

Phil Nickinson, my counterpart over at sibling site Android Central has just posted his AT&T Android Captivate review and T-Mobile Android Vibrant review, the latest, greatest US GSM competition to our own iPhone 4. They’re both Galaxy S-class devices, but one of the strengths of Android is the ability for manufacturers like Samsung and carriers like AT&T and T-Mobile (and Verizon and Sprint when their versions launch) to modify and customize the hardware and software to make their devices distinct.

Ally already posted her thoughts on the AT&T Captivate vs. iPhone 4, so if you’re trying to decide between the two, or between them and the T-Mobile Vibrant, give Phil’s a read to and then come back here and let us know what you think.

Apple, EFF comment on Jailbreak DMCA exception

Given yesterday’s Library of Congress exceptions to the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) for Jailbreak and Unlock, it was only a matter of time before both sides, Apple and the EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) commented.

Here’s what Apple told Cult of Mac:

“Apple’s goal has always been to insure that our customers have a great experience with their iPhone and we know that jailbreaking can severely degrade the experience. As we’ve said before, the vast majority of customers do not jailbreak their iPhones as this can violate the warranty and can cause the iPhone to become unstable and not work reliably.”

And here’s the EFF

By granting all of EFF’s applications, the Copyright Office and Librarian of Congress have taken three important steps today to mitigate some of the harms caused by the DMCA,” said Jennifer Granick, EFF’s Civil Liberties Director. “We are thrilled to have helped free jailbreakers, unlockers and vidders from this law’s overbroad reach.”

So anyone here heeding Apple’s warnings of doom and gloom, or are you two busy partying in the streets in celebration of your new legal standing?

My iPhone 4 has a hairline scratch – from normal use

iPhone 4 Scratched

I have a hairline scratch on the screen of my iPhone 4 and I have no idea how it got there. I’ve had my iPhone for just over 24 hours and I’d like to think I’ve treated the little girl pretty well – it goes in my pocket, sure, but solo. I also have been using the bumper for most of the time. However, the bumper has been on and off and at some point I must have set it face down on a table with a bit of grit or something underneath there.

In other words, the phone has a small scratch from what I would definitely call “normal use.”

It’s a tiny, hardly noticable scratch. With the screen on, it’s invisible – but it’s there and I can feel it. I’ve preordered the Case-Mate Clear Armor Screen Protector for iPhone 4 and am trying not to let the scratch on my shiny iPhone 4 become a scratch on my mind.

After the break, a slightly photoshopped version (just over-sharpened, really, to better show the hairline scratch.)

Why the IPhone May Be Not All You Want it to Be?

Posted on 23rd June 2010 by andystark1978 in Uncategorized

If you're subscribed to Cingular (now AT&T) and in the market for a new phone, or just simply want to buy the iPhone because it's the latest new gadget to hit the streets – you may want to think twice before making that decision. I'll say right away that I, myself, do not own an iPhone. However, this article is aimed at those are struck between whether or not to purchase one in the near future. This article is for you because I am in the same boat.

There are a few things you should consider before you decide to purchase the iPhone at this point in time. I have been in the market for technology related products for quite some time and I would like to give those who are not exactly well-versed in today's technology some advice on your decision. There are a few things you should consider before purchasing the iPhone, as it may not be the best purchase to make at this point in time.

One of the biggest issues is cost. If budget is of no concern to you, then you can skip this paragraph. If price is one of the biggest concerns in your decision-making, however, just keep in mind that the iPhone is currently $499 for a 4GB model and $599 for an 8GB model. There is an extremely good chance that this high price for a cell phone will drop in a few months or more. As with most every other product in the tech market, the iPhone will probably decrease in price if you wait a few months or even a year before your purchase. If anything, Apple may release a much better, upgraded version with more memory for the same price. This is the usual trend with most Apple products, so if you have the patience and have no immediate need for the iPhone at this point in time, wait it out.

Another thing to consider is the battery. If you purchased a product from Apple before, whether it be an iPod, a MacBook, or some other mobile device with a battery, you may have issues with it dying after a year or so. This is nothing new for Apple products. They've had this problem in the past, and they are having it now with the iPhone. This article from news.com details the battery exchange program which is similar to the iPod. The only reason I bring this up is that if you are considering the purchase of an iPhone, you should probably wait a while until they fix any huge battery related problems, or upgrade the iPhone in a way that extends the battery life. It may or may not happen, but this is just one thing to add to your list of considerations. It's no fun having a cool gadget to play with if you can't even use it because its power source is not working!

Also, when you purchase an iPhone, you have to sign a new 2-year contract as well as a special iPhone Data Plan. The iPhone is also exclusive to Cingular/AT&T, so if you don't have them as your provider and you want the iPhone, you will have to switch carriers and most likely pay an early termination fee (~$175). There are various other fees involved including taxes, activation fees, and so on. It's the usual situation with most new cell phone and contract plans, but it can be a large turn off for some people.

Last, but not least, it's always good to wait a few months before buying the latest and greatest gadget. Already there have been reports of issues dealing with the iPhone ranging from hacking, interference issues (this one was fixed), and various other bugs. This is normal and expected for a complex gadget like the iPhone with so much technology built into it. For you, the buyer, though, it may mean waiting a while until they have all the kinks worked out. You'll spend much less time trying to fix it if you let the guys at Apple do it for you.

So, that's just a few points I wanted to make about purchasing the iPhone. It's completely up to you whether or not you want to go ahead and make the purchase now or later. Just keep in mind these particular flaws, as there are others I didn't point out that can be found all over the web. Do your research first and then decide. It may seem like I'm bashing the iPhone for all its flaws, but really what I'm doing is making sure those who decide to get the iPhone make an educated purchase. You'll be happy you did, and I'll am happy that you read this, because you are now more informed.
